Verb prefixes
Verbs already taught делать / сделать, читать / прочитать, and motion прийти / уйти. This unit is the same prefixes as meaning shifts: почитать vs прочитать, записать vs написать, продать, сдать, узнать. Each lesson: How it works → Tables → Notes → Exceptions → Examples.
Lessons
Lesson 1
по- · for a while
Почитать, поговорить
On activity verbs you already know, по- often means «do it a bit / for a limited time» — not «finish the whole thing». That is a new verb, not the default pair from Verbs.
Lesson 2
за- · start / down / earn
Записать, заговорить
за- on known roots is not «the perfective of писать». записать is write down; заговорить is start speaking; заработать is earn. Motion зайти stays in Verbs.
Lesson 3
про- · through / past
Прочитать, продать
про- often means through to the end, or past / missed. You already know прочитать as the pair of читать. Here it also builds new verbs: продать, проспать, прожить.
Lesson 4
с- · off / completion
Сделать, съесть, сдать
с- (съ- / со-) often takes something off or through to completion. You already have сделать and съесть as pairs. Here the same prefix also builds списать and сдать — new meanings on писать and дать.
Lesson 5
у- · catch / away
Увидеть, узнать, уговорить
у- often means manage to catch (sight, sound, information) or take away. You already have увидеть, услышать, узнать. Here they are meaning shifts, and уговорить / убрать join them. Motion уйти stays in Verbs.
