When to use it
- не надо / не нужно + infinitive = you don’t have to; it’s unnecessary (often “please don’t bother”).
- нельзя + infinitive = you must not / it’s forbidden or impossible.
- Permission → можно. Ability → могу. Need → нужно/надо. Duty → должен.
- Tense stays on the impersonal: нужно было, можно будет — or on должен: должен был.
Pro tip
Translate the picture, not the English modal. Allowed → можно. Forbidden → нельзя. Need → нужно. Duty → должен. Don’t have to → не надо.
